Career History:
I have always loved both mathematics and biology so decided to
combine my two interests in my career even though at the time I
wasn't entirely sure what I would end up doing one day!
I majored in Applied Mathematics, Zoology and Botany and then moved
from the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) to the University of
Cape Town where I completed my Hons and MSc degrees through the
Zoology Department. This was a wonderful experience as I did
modeling projects which improved my quantitative skills, as well as
a lot of fieldwork. I spent time at sea and even participated in a
research trip to Antarctica. After my Honour's year I was approached
to assist in compiling and lecturing a first year maths course for
life science students. I have been lecturing ever since (14 years).
After my MSc I got a job in the Maths and Applied Maths Department
where I did my PhD, in between raising two gorgeous little girls.
It's been tough keeping a career going and simultaneously being a
good mother, but it's definitely possible!
