2000 Scholarship Winner: Princess Vuyiswa Radebe
22 applications were received from South Africa, Zambia, Namibia and Kenya. From these
SA WISE awarded it's first Honours scholarship to Princess Vuyiswa Radebe who is
pursuing a part-time Honours degree in Marine Biology at the University of Natal.
Vuyiswa carries out her research project at the Oceanographic Research Institute at
Durban Seaworld where she is investigating the age of Natal stumpnose (Rhabdosargus
sarba) to assess the growth rate of these fish and the status of the stock. This
involves sectioning the ear bones (otoliths) of the stumpnose to count the number of
growth rings under a microscope. Natal stumpnose is a common shore angling fish and
Vuyiswa's work will be vital in adding to knowledge about this important species.
